🎧  Listen to Introduction

Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting has a long history and rich cultural connotations. It has a strong ancient cultural feature that is different from paper-cutting in other places. This feature also determines that Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting has a certain semi-cultural nature. Its artistic style with traditional historical and cultural heritage provides valuable physical materials for the study of my country's folklore, cultural history, art history and other aspects. Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting content is mostly based on ancient customs and historical allusions; in terms of expression techniques, it pays great attention to connotation and pursues meaning; in terms of skills, it reflects the unique rough, simple and straightforward characteristics of the Qin people. Traditional Xianyang folk paper-cutting is an artistic reproduction of ancient Chinese culture. It is as precious as the ancient historical relics gathered here. It is a pearl treasure passed down from generation to generation by the people of this ancient land. Many historical symbols carried in it are undoubtedly the precious spiritual wealth left to us by our hardworking and wise ancestors. The origins of many traditional patterns and patterns that are spread all over the country can be seen in the Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting. Its development context. For example, many thematic patterns in Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting retain the historical shadows of early human activities and record the footprints of China's historical process, which is very valuable. "Deer and Crane in Spring", "Fish Drilling Lotus", "Nuwa Patching the Sky", "Five Poisonous Frogs", etc. These patterns are common in the folk and indicate auspiciousness. They are actually the embodiment of the primitive totem culture of prehistoric humans fighting against nature and the legacy of early human reproductive worship; "Mouse Eating Grapes", "Giving Birth to Children in Lotus", "Qilin Sending Children" are the reflections of people's traditional concept of praying for many children and blessings; "Dragon and Phoenix Presenting Auspiciousness" and "Mandarin Ducks Playing with Lotus" are praises for the love between men and women; "Eight Treasures Offering Longevity" and "Five Blessings Holding Longevity" are blessings for the health and longevity of the elderly; "Three Friends in Winter" and "Green Bamboo and Wintersweet" are praises for people with noble character, etc. Especially the calendar paper-cutting in Qinfeng paper-cutting, which uses the original colors of the calendar to cleverly compose and cut, making the paper-cutting pattern more appealing. Calendar paper-cutting is a unique category in paper-cutting and can be said to be the best in paper-cutting. The patterns of Qinfeng paper-cutting all express abstract thinking with concrete images, reflecting the characteristics of oriental culture. They are not only for the purpose of expressing beauty in form, but also for promoting traditional cultural morality and reflecting the penetration and influence of traditional culture on folk art through paper-cutting art. However, in the past ten years, Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting, like many other brother arts, was regarded as "poisonous weeds" and eradicated. Since then, Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting has been greatly impacted, especially in terms of inheritance, there has been a severe situation of no successors. In 1979, in order to rectify the chaos, the central government put forward a notice on excavating and rescuing the folk art that was about to be extinct. Comrade Zhu Gongming, who was engaged in mass cultural work at that time, responded to this call and began the arduous work of collecting and sorting out Xianyang folk paper-cutting. In the following decades, he went deep into dozens of towns and villages in Xianyang (including today's Qindu District and Weicheng District). Whether it was cold winter or hot summer, or wind and snow, he could not stop his enthusiasm for the rescue and excavation of folk paper-cutting. He visited the old folk artists who were still alive at that time, brought them paper and scissors, and encouraged the elderly to cut boldly. When the elderly learned from him that the paper-cutting they loved all their lives was called art, they were very excited. With his efforts, many elderly people picked up scissors that they had not used for many years. What is more gratifying is that many young people also participated in it, which gave this wonderful art of Xianyang folk paper-cutting a new lease of life. At that time, the excavation and sorting of Xianyang folk paper-cutting received strong support and affirmation from the national, provincial and municipal cultural authorities and famous scholars. During the Spring Festival of 1983, the "Xianyang Folk Paper-cutting" printed by the Shaanxi Provincial Art Museum was promoted and introduced to the province and beyond. This was the first time in Shaanxi Province at that time and caused a great response. In 1984, during the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, a large-scale "Xianyang Folk Paper-cutting Art Exhibition" was held, which caused a sensation in the society and art circles. Xianyang folk paper-cutting with strong ancient cultural characteristics was highly praised and recognized by many experts and scholars. In foreign cultural exchanges, Xianyang paper-cutting has also been praised by international friends and has been collected as a treasure by museums in Japan and other countries. During his long-term work in sorting and excavating the art of paper-cutting, Comrade Zhu Gongming discovered that in many traditional patterns, the connotations of many patterns with strong ancient cultural characteristics are still not understood by people, especially its original meaning is far from the actual significance. Uncovering the historical mystery behind each pattern has become an important part of the entire excavation and sorting work. So, he worshipped all the old artists as his teachers, asked questions without hesitation, searched through documents and books, and looked for clues in the vast river of history. His efforts finally paid off. After nearly 20 years of hard work, Comrade Zhu Gongming collected more than 10,000 traditional patterns and completed a nearly 100,000-word annotated manuscript on the theme of Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting patterns. Based on the traditional patterns and content, combined with modern paper-cutting forms of expression, he re-created them, and highly summarized and concluded the Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting in terms of theory and expression, so that the precious artistic treasure of Xianyang traditional paper-cutting can be inherited and promoted. In short, Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting, as one of the many local styles of paper-cutting art in my country, is unique in the paper-cutting art garden of my country with its unique artistic charm and style. For thousands of years, it has experienced vicissitudes and great changes but has survived. Although, for a long time, paper-cutting has not been despised by dignitaries or the so-called upper-class art, our people cherish it very much and regard it as a treasure in their hands. As the main means of beautifying themselves, it is used to decorate thousands of households and embellish the land of China. It has become a symbol of the pursuit of ideals and happiness by the broad masses of working people and a symbol of the spirit and character of the Chinese nation. However, in the face of the impact of modern culture, fewer and fewer people are engaged in folk paper-cutting nowadays. In addition, the older generation of artists have passed away one after another. Xianyang folk paper-cutting is once again facing a severe situation of no successor inheritance. Saving Xianyang folk paper-cutting has reached a point of urgency! We call on people of insight from all walks of life in society to care about and protect the survival and development of Xianyang Qinfeng paper-cutting, a precious art, so that this artistic treasure can be passed down from generation to generation and shine forever!
