The Studenica Monastery (Serbian: xd0x9cxd0xb0xd0xbdxd0xb0xd1x81xd1x82xd0xb8xd1x80 xd0xa1xd1x82xd1x83xd0xb4xd0xb5xd0xbdxd0xb8xd1x86xd0xb0, romanized:xc2xa0Manastir Studenica, pronouncedxc2xa0[mxc3xa2nastixcbx90r studxc9x9bxccx8cnitxcdxa1sa]) is a 12th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery situated 39 kilometres (24xc2xa0mi) southwest of Kraljevo and 40.9 kilometres (25.4xc2xa0mi) east of Ivanjica, in central Serbia.
Studenica was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia, and in 1986 UNESCO included Studenica monastery on the list of World Heritage Sites, with the description:
The Studenica Monastery was established in the late 12th century by Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serb state, shortly after his abdication.
The complex of the Studenica monastery includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a small single-nave church frescoed inside with works from the 12th or possibly early 13th centuries.
