The property has undergone the typical changes of a living property xe2x80x93 urban infrastructure projects and building renovation xe2x80x93 but these works have always been under strict control of the administration departments in charge of cultural heritage.
In a city classed as a xe2x80x9cHistoric Sitexe2x80x9d every intervention must comply with the cultural heritage principles established in the current laws, and, therefore, must have explicit authorization from the administration prior to project implementation.
The city of xc3x81vila was registered as a xe2x80x9cHistoric Sitexe2x80x9d in 1982, and its walls have the classification of National Monument; furthermore, each one of the ten inscribed extra-muros churches are declared as Property of Cultural Interest (BIC, Bien de Interxc3xa9s Cultural), the highest level of protection according to the current Cultural Heritage Laws.
Any intervention at the property, including archaeological investigation, requires prior administrative authorization, according to the current Cultural Heritage Laws (Law 12/2002, 11 July, of Cultural Heritage of Castile and Lexc3xb3n, Decree 37/2007, 19 April, that approves the Rules for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Castile and Lexc3xb3n, Law 16/1985, 25 June, of Spanish Historic Heritage).
