Region[edit]
The Sierra Gorda is an ecological region centered on the northern third of the state of Querxc3xa9taro and extending into the neighboring states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosxc3xad .
[1] The region is on a branch of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range and consists of a series of mountain chains that run northwest to southeast.
[2][4] The micro-environments of the region range from conifer forests, oak forests, mostly found on mountain peaks, banana and sugar cane fields in the deeper canyons.
[2][3] At this time, the native peoples of the region were semi nomadic hunter gathers, such as the Pames, Ximpeces Guachichils and Jonaz, generally referred to together as the Chichimecas.
Efforts to dominate the region included evangelization efforts, many of which failed before the mid 18th century.
This was especially true during the Mexican Revolution with many churches in the region were sacked and a number of portal figures on these Franciscan churches became xe2x80x9cdecapitatedxe2x80x9d by the fighting.
Although the mission in Jalpan was established before Junxc3xadpero Serraxe2x80x99s 1750 arrival into the region, Serra is given credit for building the five main missions of this area and completing the evangelization of the local people.
The Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Queretaro comprises five missions which were built in the 18th century, during the last phase of the evangelisation of the interior of Mexico, located in the mountainous Sierra Gorda region in central Mexico.
The mixed architecture of these monuments is the result of a new and singular architectural identity typical of this region which has been integrated with the surrounding landscape.
