The Gudit Stelae to the west of town, unlike the northern area, are interspersed with mostly 4th century tombs.

According to the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), as of July 2012 the town of Axum's estimated population was 56,576.

Several stelae survive in the town of Aksum dating between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
